“Hauora is a Maori philosophy for health unique to New Zealand.”
The four walls of a house is used as an example to represent the 4 dimensions of hauora:
- Taha tinana: Physical well-being
- Eating wholesome food, physical exercise, adequate rest and regeneration
- Taha hinengaro: Mental/emotional well-being
- Being aware of your thoughts and feelings and expressing them appropriately
- Taha whanau: Social well-being
- Participating in relationships, caring for and connecting with others, sharing and using social support networks
- Taha wairua: Spiritual well-being
- Having a sense of identity, meaning and purpose in Life and living for something greater than yourself

Just like you cannot have a house without all 4 walls intact, you cannot be healthy without living all the 4 components of hauora. Thus, BALANCE is key to the hauora philosophy. You can't be in peak physical performance with a poor outlook on life and be healthy just as you can't have a spiritual outlook on life without taking care of your physical needs or the needs of others... It is the synergy of the 4 components of hauora that generates a vibrant and healthy lifestyle.
My intention for this blog is to strengthen the social aspect of hauora in my journey by connecting with others who are on the healing path. I will share tips and tricks, philosophies and tools relating to the 4 aspects of hauora. Stay tuned and make sure to connect!
